The Skylake microarchitecture has taken many forms since it was first introduced. The biggest changes to the formula occurred following the launch of AMD Ryzen, which has been putting pressure on Intel to roll out greater core counts across its client i3, i5, and i7 lineup. The first slim laptops under the 10th Gen umbrella are now available for purchase, too. Intel Comet Lake performance Single-core performance has only increased moderately with each generation since Skylake.
Each one improving a wee bit on the last. Applications that favour multithreaded chops will see another significant bump to performance with the step up to a decacore chip, however. There have been rumours Intel delayed the release to get the power draw down on the top core CPU, and now Intel board partners have apparently leaked a May announcement timeframe for the flagship Z motherboards.
And there would be no point releasing chips until the boards are out because the new LGA chips are incompatible with existing mobos. Also corroborating this early timeframe is the fact that Arctic Freezer coolers with LGA support are already on sale.
A roadmap leaked to Hong Kong-based site, XFastest from an anonymous source and not verifiableindicates Comet Lake S will launch ever-so-slightly before the end of alongside series chipsets.
This also aligns with previous speculation based on information hidden in plain site within patches to the Linux graphics driver. More support and features will be in the patches that follow. And a monster power supply too, because at peak performance the CPU alone wants to draw W. That's higher than the TDP of an Nvidia RTX graphics card and actually about what we've measured in terms of peak board power too, which is… a lot even for a desktop processor. We had heard reports that Intel had been holding back the release of its new range of 10th Gen desktop processors because the flagship ten-core Comet Lake CPU, the Core i9 series, was getting rather thirsty.
It was suggested that motherboard makers were getting frustrated with the delay—they'd supposedly had new Z motherboards ready for a while—and that Intel was working on getting that hefty power draw down. Now it looks like maybe Intel has given up, and is simply going with what it's got.
The Comet Lake launch announcement is rumoured to happen at the end of the month, with a release later in May. And they're incredibly high.
You're probably more familiar with the term TDP, or thermal design point, of a processor—that relates to this first PL1 rating. It stands for power level one and is the rating in Watts that the chip will run at under long-term load. These 10th Gen CPUs are essentially using the same 14nm technology we've had in our PCs sinceso that's probably not a huge surprise to anyone. The PL2 rating of W shows that when the F is aiming for a short-term burst of power—what we normally refer to as entering its Turbo mode—it needs a huge amount of power to sustain that performance across all ten cores.
And, from the latest leak, we can see that even drawing that level of power it's only running at 4. Compare that to the limited edition Core i9 KSwhich could run at 5GHz across all of its eight cores, and ran at what looks like a PL2 rating of just over W. Or the lower power level of Comet Lake. The long and short of all this is that you're really going to want to have one of the best CPU coolers on the planet, and a pretty hefty PSU too, if you decide to upgrade your gaming PC to the next-gen Intel Comet Lake processors.
And it looks like a mm liquid chip chiller is also going to be de rigueur for any of the 10th Gen K-series chips. Otherwise you're unlikely to be seeing the true potential of the last days of Skylake architecture.

Topics Hardware.Due to the typically multi-year process of developing and fielding a new processor, Intel's response to AMD's Ryzen CPUs has been slow and exacerbated by its tardy jump to the 10nm node.
That leaves Intel with a gap to plug if it wants to grapple with the forthcoming Ryzen series. Intel hasn't officially revealed its plans for the Comet Lake processors, or even their very existence, but concrete information has already come to the surface. There are still several unanswered questions, but let's take a look at what we know, and what we don't. Word of the Comet Lake CML processors surfaced in late in a post from an anonymous Chiphell forum poster that claimed the core, 14nm chips were discussed at a partner event.
As with most early mentions of a new processor, there was little verifiable information to back the claims. This posting gave us little information to work on, aside from the note that the processors wielded Intel's Gen9 graphics, which implies the chips come with some variant of the 14nm process.
The listing also states that Comet Lake "comes off" the Coffee Lake family, which suggests the chips feature that same microarchitecture.
The most substantial information came with the inclusion of new graphics drivers in the Linux kernel driver and corebootpreviously known as LinuxBIOS. The S-Series comes as yet another refresh of the Coffee Lake Refresh processors for the mainstream desktop. These desktop processors mark Intel's first core model for its mainstream platform, a new high watermark and also include six-core models that will likely replace or augment the Core i5 and i7 series. That would mean the company would have to bring the Core i3 models up to six-core, six-thread, and finally bring the Pentium lineup to a quad-core design.
Intel Comet Lake-S Desktop CPUs: Specs, Price & Release Date
These models range from dual-core models for the U-series to eight-core models for the H-Series. The six core U-series models mark a new high core count for the ultra low power segment, while eight cores is a new height for the high-power H-Series. The driver listings indicate the Comet Lake chips come packing Intel's Gen9 graphics, which could be a basic listing of Intel's most recent Gen 9. Gen 9. The GT2 graphics designation also tells us the processors will feature either UHD Graphics or engines, with the graphics having slightly higher frequencies.
Intel's current modular graphics engine debuted with its Skylake processors but has been improved over subsequent generations, with the latest improvements consisting of minor improvements to the display and media blocks. The underlying design has been present throughout Intel's 14nm journeys, once again implying the Comet Lake processors remain on 14nm.
It's notable that Intel's only shipping 10nm processors, which hail from its failed Cannon Lake excursion, feature disabled Gen10 graphics. All signs point to the Comet Lake processors featuring the 14nm process, partly because they are a stopgap to vie with AMD's Ryzen series processors until Intel's 10nm Ice Lake processors come to market in latebut we aren't sure which iteration of the 14nm process will be under the hood.
Intel has iterated on its Skylake microarchitecture incessantly, largely due to its previous policy of locking new architectures behind jumps to smaller process nodes. That obviously restricted the company's progress while it is mired on the 14nm process due to nagging delays to its 10nm processors. That means that its new CPU core designs have traditionally required a move to new, smaller manufacturing processes.
That approach became a liability as Intel encountered massive delays with its 10nm process. Intel tells us it will now design new microarchitectures to be portable between nodes. That will allow the company to move forward even if it encounters roadblocks on its path to smaller transistors. However, this microarchitecture will not come to 14nm processors. That means the probability of Comet Lake coming with the fourth generation of the Skylake microarchitecture is high.
Intel's recent core count increases have come as a byproduct of simply adding more cores to the existing design that still wields the ring bus interconnect. The ring bus has proven to have limited scalability, so Intel moved forward with its mesh architecture for its Xeon Scalable processors.In the process, it accidentally disclosed model number of an unannounced processor, the Core iU.
The new chip belongs to the Comet Lake-U family, so it was designed primarily for notebooks. Unfortunately, we have no idea about other specifications of the processor, but we asked Intel for additional information on the matter. Intel from time to time refreshes its client CPUs in Spring in a bid to let PC makers to introduce improved lineup of products, so from this point of view an addition of the Core iU to the family is not surprising.
Previously, Intel only used its Assembly, Test, and Finish site in China to build its Comet Lake-U processors, so an additional site may improve availability. Given the local environment surrounding COVID, this is also likely Intel hedging its bets with its facilities, in the case that one isn't running.

As 10th-gen Comet Lake shares much in common with the 8th-gen Whiskey Lake U, we know what to expect there too. On the far left are the individual model numbers of each new 10th-gen CPU. As you move from left to right, ask yourself how important each criterion is for what you do or might do, and note how it balances against the other CPUs.
For example, if you want a CPU with good multi-core performance and with good gaming performance, plus you want the promise of new instructions that bring new performance down the road, the 10th-gen Ice Lake Core iG7 should be on your short list.
This can manifest in photo applications that can detect faces faster and with more accuracy. Is it worth it? It offered minimal practical benefits when launched in but rapidly became worth its weight in gold once MP3 encoders supported it.
Applications will need to be updated to support the faster performance. If video conversion using the newest formats is important to you, the 10th-gen Ice Lake should rank higher. More cores are generally going to be better for most advanced content creation chores such as video editing, 3D modelling, or advanced photo tools that support the additional cores. You might also want to look to multi-core performance CPUs if you like to run multiple apps that are CPU-intensive at the same time.
A CPU with more cores tends to outperform one with fewer cores when multi-tasking heavily, so look to the CPU with the most cores for that job. These apps instead tend to get more performance from just a core or two running at very high clock speeds or with greater efficiency. Yes, Megahertz still matters. For this category, we rate the CPUs with the highest clock speeds, and the capability to actually hold them at the top. Lower clock speeds, however, can be mitigated by using each megahertz more efficiently.
Ice Lake CPUs will actually perform quite well too. The slowest performance will be in Core i3 laptops, which are intentionally limited in clock speed, and in the low-voltage, power-efficient versions of Ice Lake and Comet Lake.
Gaming and graphics performance is pretty straightforward. The CPUs with the best graphics performance will give you smoother gaming or prettier graphics. In fact, it can be on a par with some discrete graphics chips.
We say this with the caution that battery life of a laptop is a recipe based on each individual laptop design including the screen quality and type, the screen resolution, the battery size, and the tuning by the laptop vendor.
